Boston Man Jailed for Fatal A16 Crash Involving ‘Suicidal’ Driving

Title: Boston Resident Handed a 10-Year Prison Sentence for Lethal A16 Collision as Result of High-Risk Driving

A Boston man has received a prison sentence of close to 11 years as a consequence of a deadly accident that took place on the A16. The accident resulted in the deaths of the man’s wife and injuries to four other people. The accident happened as Asen Kurtev, aged 46, was in the process of overtaking a row of vehicles in the vicinity of Boston, Lincolnshire, due to being behind schedule for work. This action led to a severe frontal collision. His wife, 39-year-old Sofka Mitkova, lost her life at the accident scene due to upper body injuries on 4th March 2024. In addition to this, the driver of the other vehicle, as well as three passengers present in Kurtev’s vehicle, suffered severe injuries.

A report from an accident investigator attributed the cause of the accident to Kurtev’s high-risk driving, with eye-witness accounts indicating he had perilously undertaken similar manoeuvres prior to the lethal accident. During the course of a police interview, Kurtev summarised his driving behaviour as ‘devilish’. The injuries experienced by those involved included multiple fractures, which called for surgical intervention and ongoing medical care. During court proceedings, it was brought to light that the rear seatbelts present in Kurtev’s vehicle were not functional, and they were not being used by the passengers.

Lincoln Crown Court’s Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight commented on the immense physical and emotional damage inflicted upon the victims while handing down the sentence. Kurtev, who resides on Boston’s Carlton Road, submitted guilty pleas to one count of causing a death as a result of dangerous driving and four counts of causing serious injuries through dangerous driving. As a native of Bulgaria, Kurtev is anticipated to face deportation following completion of his sentence.
