Animals at Lincoln Zoo are finding reprieve from soaring temperatures during a current heatwave, via specially designed ice lollies, some even made from blood. Neil Mumby, the zoo’s director, stressed the necessity for maintaining animal comfort during this atypical weather. ‘In light of the unusual heat, we have to ensure the welfare of all our animals by tucking the lollies away in various corners,’ he said.
The record temperature in Lincolnshire was registered at Coningsby, as reported by the Met Office. The weather forecast predicts a reprieve on Sunday, with temperatures around 24C.
Zookeepers are diligently monitoring animals that are not traditionally accustomed to such heat, making sure they have access to shade and fresh water. Different forms of icy treats, such as frozen fruit and meat lollipops, are dispensed throughout the day. Visitors have seen a Sri Lankan sloth bear enjoy a frozen lactose-free milk treat, while spider monkeys from Columbia delight in frozen fruit lollies. Arctic wolves, not naturally adapted to heat, were given blood ice lollies.
Neil Mumby elaborated on the unusual treats, ‘We receive a lot of meat, and we’ve got many carnivores here, hence, we freeze excess blood and use it as treats.’ He added that the wolves were particularly fond of it. Animals with sun-sensitive skin were offered extra protection via sunscreen. ‘Our tapir, for instance, has a nose that needs extra care,’ Mumby added, emphasising the tailored approach taken to safeguard this unique and loved creature.
While Lincolnshire is still on heat alert, cooler weather is anticipated, offering some relief after setting a temperature record of 33.2C in Charlwood, near Gatwick. The heatwave presents challenges not only for the animals but also installed a new temperature benchmark.
