A Louth-based father has voiced his discontent after receiving a warning of a possible fine for his sons’ unauthorised absence from school, due to their attendance at the Lincolnshire Show. 55-year-old Chris Wilkinson is requesting a revision of local council policy in order to sympathise with parents’ decisions. He raised the prospect of the council subsidising school children’s visits to the Lincolnshire Show, an event he claims yields considerable educative benefits in terms of understanding rural livelihoods.
The Lincolnshire Show, a linchpin event for the county, prides itself on celebrating country life and includes livestock and equestrian contests. Mr Wilkinson, who recalls with fondness his own childhood attendance at the show, said, “The Lincolnshire Show was not a contentious issue during my school years. School schedules were adjusted in order to accommodate the two-day event.”
Although the Department for Education guidelines necessitate schools to contemplate fines for unauthorised absences of five days or longer, Mr Wilkinson argues that the council should nurture chances for children to gain knowledge about their local heritage. “The financial demand of a £75 family ticket to the show coupled with the threat of a fine works as a discouragement,” he remarks.
In response, Matthew Clayton, head of educational support at Lincolnshire County Council, mentioned that while schools might exercise some discretion, they are encouraged to record absences as unauthorised unless they meet the criteria of ‘exceptional circumstances’. The council is dedicated to augmenting attendance records and diminishing constant absences through stringent procedures promoting attendance.
