Title: Grimsby’s Commemorative Mosaic Demolished Despite Public Opposition
A mosaic from the Freshney Place shopping centre in Grimsby, which was installed in honour of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, has surprisingly been demolished, disregarding locals’ attempts to preserve it. The North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) explained that endeavours to delicately remove the tiles were rendered unsuccessful due to severe cracking. This demolition forms a part of a wider regeneration plan aiming to transform the shopping centre’s western flank.
In reaction to this event, Councillor Robson Augusta expressed his discontent, accentuating that the mosaic was considered a treasured piece of Grimsby’s heritage. He pointed out that the community’s concerns were not collectively addressed before the decision to proceed with the demolition was made. The petition to conserve the mosaic succeeded to secure more than 1,250 signatures, and local heritage groups, including the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Civic Society, championed its preservation.
Nevertheless, NELC assures that they sought professional advice regarding the preservation of the mosaic. In an attempt to keep its memory alive, the council has arranged for detailed scanning and high-resolution photography for potential future reproduction. The council intends to collaborate with the local community to find a suitable location in Grimsby to exhibit these visuals, thus ensuring the continued celebration of the mosaic’s heritage.
