The Abbey Walk car park in Grimsby, set for demolition, has turned to an unconventional method of preventing birds from nesting within the facility. Two trained hawks, namely Mavric and Chief, are being enlisted for the purpose.
Since May 2024, the car park has been closed due to water damage-caused structural issues. The demolition is scheduled to take place once it is assured there are no active bird nests in the vicinity, as the law requires any demolition work to be postponed until the fledglings have vacated their nests.
The North East Lincolnshire Council has arranged for the hawks to routinely fly at low altitudes through the car park twice a week. They will serve as a deterrent to discourage seagulls and pigeons from nesting within the decrepit structure.
