British Steel, based in Scunthorpe, has received more than 200 applications for just 30 apprenticeship opportunities, highlighting substantial local interest in industrial work. The influx of applications comes in the wake of the company’s recent recruitment endeavour which offered 180 permanent roles. After three years, the company is once again welcoming a new cohort of apprentices. This opportunity materialised following a UK government intervention to avoid around 2,700 job losses and establish control over the company from its previous Chinese owner, Jingye. The interim chief executive, Allan Bell, commented that the substantial amount of applications could be seen as a significant endorsement of the company’s future prospects.
