Residents of the Isle of Axholme, which encompasses West Butterwick and Althorpe, have shared their growing frustrations regarding repeated power outages, drawing parallels to the blackouts experienced in the 1970s. West Butterwick inhabitant, Maggie Wootten, characterised the disruptions as “stressful” and “annoying”. Equally frustrated, Gary Cawkwell of Althorpe, labelled the scenario as “ridiculous” and highlighted that residents have had to resort to candlelight.
These power interruptions, which have been ongoing since December, have significantly disrupted daily routines, often lasting for several hours. Whilst Northern Powergrid has assured that the fault in Northern Lincolnshire has been rectified, residents remain unconvinced.
In Haxey, a local foodbank expressed severe frustration in April when power cuts led to the spoiling of their chilled food stocks, intensifying hardships within the community.
Having lived in the area for 34 years, Maggie Wootten voiced concerns about the frequency of the power cuts in the past two months. She questioned the reliability of the service, especially considering the high payment that local residents continue to sustain.
While some dwellers have been offered a compensation of £30 to account for the inconvenience, this remedy fails to placate everyone. For example, local resident Christine Kennedy expressed scepticism towards the reasons provided for the power cuts, particularly the suggestion of local wildlife being the root cause.
