Energy Minister Urges Support for Lindsey Oil Refinery Workers Facing Job Losses

Energy Minister Michael Shanks told owners to “do the decent thing” after the refinery’s collapse.

Energy Minister Urges Support for Lindsey Oil Refinery Workers Facing Job Losses

Title: Energy Minister Appeals for Support of Lindsey Oil Refinery Workers Confronting Job Losses

Revised Content:

An appeal has been made by the Energy Minister to help secure the futures of hundreds working at the Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery in North East Lincolnshire. The minister encouraged the owners to provide financial assistance following the business’s descent into administration. As of 30 June, the refinery, now insolvent, puts more than 420 jobs in immediate jeopardy. An additional 120 HGV drivers have been laid off from the related firm, Axis Logistics.

Michael Shanks, the Energy Minister, directly communicated with Sanjeev and Arani Soosaipillai, the proprietors of the Prax Group. Shanks underscored their responsibility in these challenging times towards the staff. Their consideration of providing financial aid or sponsoring retraining programmes aim to ease the workforce’s transition into new occupational roles, should the refinery remain unsold.

The current crisis could potentially place up to 1,000 jobs at risk, incorporating contractor and supply chain positions, according to Unite the Union. Administrator Teneo has disclosed that only a limited number of workers will be retained temporarily to help with the business’s shutdown.

The Prax Group, the refinery’s owner since its acquisition from Total in 2021, is under close scrutiny as reported losses from the site amount to about £75 million. The Official Receiver is presently overseeing the site’s safe operations while the government examines potential support measures for the employees.

The Energy Minister’s call to action underscores the refinery’s local importance to the community and the immediate need for business responsibility to soften the impact of this closure.
