Final Stage of Grantham Guildhall Clock Tower Repairs Set to Begin

The clock tower perched atop the Victorian-era Grantham Guildhall is due to enter its final stage of renovation work this upcoming Sunday. Initiated last October following a water seepage into the ballroom due to poor weather, the refurbishment scheme now shifts focus to the bell tower situated on St. Peter’s Hill. South Kesteven District Council recently publicised the commencement this crucial restoration venture.

The project, according to Councillor Richard Cleaver, has experienced delays due to the necessity for further comprehensive maintenance, discovered unexpectedly in the course of the initiative. Expanding on this, Cleaver explained, ‘We unfortunately found substantial challenges with the bell turret’s condition, requiring an intense evaluation by our consultant and the conservation officer, considering the Grade II status of the building. To facilitate the necessary repairs, it’s essential to completely dismantle the structure, restore it in the workshop then reinstall it via crane.’

In addition to the turret, the accompanying columns will also be temporarily disassembled for repair, with any fractional openings at the lead base duly tended to. Scaffolding for the project is planned for deconstruction by August, subsequent to the window redecoration. It is projected that by next spring, the bell tower will be fully refurbished and reassembled.
