Insolvency at Immingham’s Lindsey Oil Refinery Puts 1,000 Jobs at Risk

The government says workers at the Lindsey plant in Lincolnshire have been “badly let down”.

Insolvency at Immingham’s Lindsey Oil Refinery Puts 1,000 Jobs at Risk

The fate of 420 workers at Lindsey Oil Refinery in Immingham, North East Lincolnshire, rests on uncertain grounds. This comes as the refinery’s proprietor, Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery Limited, has launched into administration. The government is being urged to initiate an immediate investigation in the wake of the crisis. This is coupled with warnings from Unite the Union who have insisted that possible redundancies could rise as high as 1,000. This figure incorporates contractors and the expansive supply chain.

Energy Secretary Michael Shanks has expressed disdain towards the firm for seemingly allowing their workforce down. Nevertheless, he reassured of government assistance for those in question along with the local community. Lindsey Oil Refinery was purchased by Prax Group in 2021 from Total, but it has since grappled with financial issues. Reportedly, the firm has witnessed a loss of £75 million following the acquisition.

As the refinery anticipates the appointing of special administrators and managers, the government is exploring all available possibilities to maintain the refinery in operation and guarantee a sustainable employment future in the sector.
