Lincolnshire Turf Grower Faces Drought Challenges

A turf grower in Lincolnshire says the effect of relentless heat has been “heartbreaking”.

Lincolnshire Turf Grower Faces Drought Challenges

Title: Lincolnshire Turf Producer Confronts Drought Obstacles

Revised Content:
Simon Hutton, a turf producer located near Lincolnshire who provides top quality turf to esteemed venues such as Wimbledon and Manchester United’s Old Trafford, is dealing with the repercussions of ongoing high temperatures and drought conditions. Mr Hutton, the Managing Director of Tillers Turf, disclosed that drought conditions have left between 65 and 75% of his fields parched due to inadequate rainfall since February, posing a significant challenge. With only 30mm of rainfall recorded on his 2200-acre property since then, he has had to focus his efforts on the irrigation of high-end turf intended for major venues, inevitably leaving lower-quality fields to bear the brunt of these conditions.

Despite such efforts, the relentless heat has resulted in some fields being ‘scorched’, affecting the quality of turf meant for golf courses. Consequently, this turf now has to be sold at a slashed price, negatively impacting the company’s profits. Richard Owens, the Technical Manager, highlighted that the extreme dryness has left certain areas with a ‘crisp and crunchy’ texture, likening it to a Ryvita biscuit. Despite the frustration these conditions induce, both Mr Hutton and Mr Owens continued to focus on their efforts, cognisant of the fact that the weather situation is out of their hands.
