Motorist Assaulted by Retired Lincolnshire Police Inspector Awarded £100k Compensation

Shane Price was attacked by Jonathan Mellor, then an inspector, on a Lincolnshire road in 2021.

A driver has been awarded £100,000 in compensation, following an assault by a retired inspector from Lincolnshire Police on the A46 between Newark and Lincoln. The event took place on 26 May 2021 and involved Jonathan Mellor, an officer with over three decades of service, who was seen on video attacking Shane Price, culminating in him stamping on Mr Price’s foot. The incident led to Mr Price suffering from physical pain and psychological distress.

Mr Mellor was acquitted of assault charges by the court, but a later internal hearing ruled him guilty of gross professional misconduct, which would have resulted in his dismissal if he hadn’t already left the force. The costs of Mr Price’s legal proceedings are also being met by the compensation. Lincolnshire Police have remained silent on further development of the incident.
