New Cabinet Formed at Boston Borough Council Amid Political Upheaval

A reshuffling has taken place at Boston Borough Council with a new leadership team stepping in, after Anne Dorrian, the previous leader, was ousted. Dale Broughton, the former deputy leader, has now taken charge of a coalition cabinet of nine. This major change followed the departure of 14 councillors from the Boston Independents to establish the Progressive Independents Boston group. The fresh cabinet includes seven Progressive Independents, a Conservative, and Mike Gilbert, the latest deputy leader from the 20-20 Independent group. The political landscape at the council has shifted markedly, with the Progressive Independents holding 14 out of the 30 council seats, just under a majority. Dorrian, a co-founder of the Boston Independents who assumed leadership in 2023, derided the defections as an act of treachery, claiming she was ousted by a group opting for ‘betrayal rather than bravery’. Countering, Broughton argued that ’14 out of 17 councillors can’t be mistaken’.
