A state-of-the-art four-screen cinema has newly launched in the centre of Gainsborough, signifying a major development in the £9 million regeneration project aimed at revitalising the town. The cinema, run by Savoy Cinemas, provides 330 seats and is conveniently situated in the Market Place, offering an easy gateway to the Marshall’s Yard shopping area through a walkway.
The ambitious redevelopment also comprises two new retailers and a dining establishment. Sally Grindrod-Smith, director of planning, regeneration and communities for West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) voiced her confidence towards the project’s influence, asserting it would assist in “consolidating the modern with the traditional”. Amid a decline in conventional retail, the new recreational facilities are likely to attract more visitors to the city centre, encouraging them to discover and relish what Gainsborough presents.
This development takes the place of the former Oldrids department store site, which was taken down in June 2023. The funding for this project was a shared endeavour, receiving contributions from WLDC, the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the government’s levelling up fund, and Savoy Cinemas.
