Safety Measures Announced for A1 in South Lincolnshire

Several gaps in the central reservation of the A1, extending from Little Ponton to South Witham in Lincolnshire, are set to be closed as part of a new road safety initiative. National Highways has plans to install steel barriers across 13 crossing points, following local concerns about the safety of this section of the road. This resolution comes on the heels of public gatherings where the frequency of accidents on this portion of the route was underscored; nearly 800 collisions have been reported since 2015, between Peterborough and Blyth, raising red flags about safety.

National Highways’ representative, Phil Shaw, shared that more than £19m has already been poured into safety upgrades for the A1, which include new road markings, improved signage, LED-lit road studs, and red high-friction road surfaces. Shaw emphasised the local community’s endorsement of this initiative to close the gaps, acknowledging the legal and technical intricacies involved. National Highways is committed to ensuring that the issue will not merely be shifted elsewhere, taking into consideration collision data and preserving public rights of way as part of its long-term safety strategy.

The work is expected to kick-off on 16 July, and most of the installation will be carried out during overnight closures throughout a five-week period, aiming to minimise daytime disruption for local commuters and those travelling through the area.
