A resident of Spalding, Daniel Algar, has been found guilty of planning to kidnap Gary Leggate, the spouse of his partner. The verdict came after a trial at Lincoln Crown Court. Algar, who is 41, was given conditional bail and is due to receive his sentence on 29 August.
The intense event took place on the A52, near Boston, at around 10:00 PM on 22 September 2022. As tangible in the testimonies provided in court, Mr Leggate was on his way home when he came across Algar, concealed with a mask, in the rear seat of his car. A passersby noticed the car stopping abruptly on the wrong side of the road, followed by both men getting out of the vehicle. Allegedly, Mr Leggate identified the masked individual as “Dan from Spalding”, whom he knew as the man having an extra-marital relationship with his wife.
Despite Algar’s denial of being the masked character and claiming the entire incident as a calculated conspiracy by Mr Leggate, the prosecution provided evidence that conflicted his defence. Certain critical factors included Algar’s noticeable Yorkshire accent and a “musty, smoky” scent recognised by Mr Leggate, hinting at Algar’s smoking habit. Despite the defence counsel trying to posit Mr Leggate’s intent for retaliation due to the affair, the jury convicted Algar.
Judge James House KC recommended Algar to brace himself for a prison sentence, indicating the severity of the crime committed.
